Sucralose is a no-calorie sweetener that can be used to reduce one's intake of added sugars while still providing the satisfaction of sweetness. It is about 600 times sweeter than sugar, allowing only small amounts to be used to match the sweetness of sugar. Approved by regulatory agencies like the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use as a general-purpose sweetener, sucralose is exceptionally stable and can be used in various foods and beverages, including those that require heating or freezing.
Sucralose is made from regular table sugar (sucrose) through a process where three hydroxyl groups on the sucrose molecule are replaced with chlorine atoms. Unlike sugar, sucralose is not broken down for energy in the body. About 85 percent of consumed sucralose is excreted unchanged in feces, with the remaining 15 percent excreted quickly in urine. Over 100 safety studies spanning more than 20 years have consistently shown sucralose to be safe for consumption, with regulatory bodies establishing an acceptable daily intake (ADI) of 5 milligrams per kilogram of body weight per day.
Sucralose is safe for consumption by people of all ages, including children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and those with diabetes. It does not affect blood glucose levels or contribute to calories consumed. Foods and beverages sweetened with sucralose are often recommended to individuals with diabetes as an alternative to sugar-sweetened products. Moreover, sucralose can play a role in weight loss and weight management when used to substitute for full-calorie, sugar-containing options. While some observational studies suggest a link between low-calorie sweetener consumption and increased body weight, evidence from randomized controlled trials supports the role of sucralose in modest weight loss.
Concerns about sucralose increasing hunger or cravings have not been substantiated in human studies. Research indicates that sucralose does not affect appetite-related hormones or total energy intake. Overall, sucralose offers a safe and effective way to enjoy sweet-tasting foods and beverages while reducing calorie and sugar intake.
The acceptable daily intake of sucralose is 5-15 mg/kg body weight. Typically, one tablet (8 mg) is sufficient to sweeten a cup of tea or coffee.
Add one sachet to tea, coffee, juices, or other food items as desired.
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
